Complete Guide to IELTS Listening

FORMAT-

The listening module takes about 30 minutes to complete. At the end of the module, takers are allowed 10 minutes to transfer their answer to an answer sheet and the listening module is same for both academic and general training version of the test. There are 4 sections, each section with10 questions. Each of the section has one or more of the various tasks types. The test gets progressively more difficult and all the instructions are printed on the question booklet.
Marking-One mark is given for each correct answer. Spelling is important, a spelling mistake counts as a wrong answer.
Both American and British English spellings are accepted but consistent and a hyphenated word (eg. absent-minded, flow chart) counts as a word.
Grammar is important (eg. if you write a singular noun instead of a plural noun, it counts as a wrong answer and writes answers clearly. illegible handwriting will result in a wrong answer.
AUDIO RECORDING-
You will hear a variety of accent eg. British American and Australian but answer the question as you listen because the recording played only once. Some time is allowed during the recording to preview the question.
The answer is in the same order as the information on the recording. If you miss listening to the information for a pe4rticular question, guess the answer because the wrong answers are not  penalised

TIPS AND STRATEGIES -1.) At the beginning of each section read the question for that section carefully, before the recording starts. This will help you to follow the recording and identify the answer.
2.) After completing a section, it is better to look ahead and read the questions for the next section than to worry about the last section.
3.) You will sometime have a list of option to choose from an answer. the possible answers may be listed in alphabetical order and not necessarily in the order, you will hear them.
4.) Be careful to note word limits. If there is an instruction: write no more than two words writing more than two words will mean you will receive no marks at all for your answers, even if some of the words were correct.

5.) Try to listen for the key-words or synonyms (words that have the same or nearly the same meaning as another word) From the question to help you identify the answer. for example, in the recording, you might hear. " She likes going to the gym and playing tennis." On your answer sheet. This could appear as " She is an active person."
6.) You may be asked to write down words that have been spelt out in the recording. In order to do this well, you need to know the English alphabet and how each letter is pronounced (for example, The letter "W" is pronounced as ' double-u'
7.) Listen carefully for the words which indicate which stage of the recording, you are listening to, eg. ' firstly', 'my next point', ' to same up.' These words will help you identify which question you have reached.
8.) As you are listening to the recording, cross out options that do not fit. This makes it easier for you to find the right answer.
9.) If you are writing dates as an answer to any question, remember that there are several correct ways to writing them (eg. 24th April and 24 April are all correct)
10.) If there are questions you can not answers leave them and move on to the next question, this will help you to say calm and positive. Go back to these questions at the end, if you have time.
11.) After the last recording has ended you have 10 minutes to transfer your answers from the listening booklets to your answer sheet. do not make the mistakes of copying these answers across to their answer sheet in between sections or you may miss important information about the next section of the test. wait until the end of section four before transferring your answers.
12.) Always circle the instructions regarding the number of words in your answer- they change throughout the exam.
13.) Notes the question number order on diagrams, flow charts and tables- this is the order you will hear the information.
14.) Use all available time to read the questions before listening. In section 1, 2 and 3 the listening is dividing into two parts you have about 20 seconds to prepare before you listen to the first part, and another 29 seconds before you listen to the second part. You then have 30 seconds to check your answers- If you fill confident about your answers move on- get as much extra preparation time as you can. in section 4 you have to answer all 10 questions in one listening part dso you really need to get ahead to prepare for this.
15.) When you transfer your answers to the answer sheet make sure you write the answer in the correct space- too many students have made mistakes here and lost all their marks.
16.) If the answer is a letter (A, B, C etc.) make sure you write the letter not the actual word from the listening - another mistake so many students have made. If your answer is a name make sure the first letter is the capital letter.
17.) When you read questions focus on the keywords- underline them or circle them - this will help you concentrate on finding the right answer.
18.) For shot answer or gap-fills try to predict the answer, or at least think about the grammar of the answer, before listening.
19.) For multiple-choice questions, and questions that required you to choose from the list, try to rephrase the ideas or think of similar meaning vocabulary that you might hear. F or multiple-choice questions, if you hear something that tells you that one of the answers is wrong then put on X next to the answer- identifying the wrong answer can help you to find the correct answer.
